Many times, hardwood flooring consumers and retailers have questions about how hardwood floors react to moisture in various regions of the country. Hardwood floors will expand and contract to different degrees according to varying levels of moisture in the environment and the wood itself. Hardwood flooring installed in regions with arid climates will react differently than hardwood floors in regions subject to seasonal high humidity levels. But that’s only part of the story. From carpet to sheet vinyl, to laminate and hand scraped hardwood, flooring retailers are always on the lookout for the “Next Big Thing”. Recent research indicates that the “Next Big Thing” may be the “Next Big Green Thing”.

According to the Retail Industry Leaders Association’s New Sustainability Initiative, the green building market is growing at a rate of 23% per year and green flooring will become the fastest growing segment of the green building market by 2011. According to the American Institute of Architects’ Home Design Trend Survey of 500 firms concentrating on residential architecture, “The demand for sustainable materials and solutions continues to rise” and 61% indicated their clients would pay more for renewable flooring.
